Where I live, things that are not working are spoilt. For example, My watch is spoilt; My car is spoilt; My motorcycle is spoilt; My fridge is spoilt; My radio is spoilt; My television is spoilt.
I believe the correct word is “broken”, not “spoilt”. Please let me know what other words can replace “spoilt”.
Thanks.
That is what you call "idiom", a word or phrase that has a special meaning in one place. Many people say "broke" for that case, as in "Don't fix things that aren't broke." There are a bazillion replacements, just literal descriptions such as not working, down, dead, burned out, and others.
@tanguatlay,
Broken is the correct word. We wouldn't say broke in the UK, that's an American thing.
There are other terms we'd use,
knackered springs to mind, but it is slightly vulgar.
