Internet Access in the Boonies - Satellite??

I live in the 3 miles from he city limits of Midland, Texas. I currently have dial up and the absolute MAX speed is 21 kbps regardless of which provider I use. I ran new phone lines, contacted the phone company, etc. I used to get 44kbps in town.

I have examined the following options with no success;

Cable - None even close.
DSL - 44,000 feet away but coming at a snails pace, not an option.
Wireless - Have had a site survey, not available.
"Hi Speed" dial up - Tried it, not much better.

Everyone I talk to about DirectWay says it is not very good. Clouds, rain, wind, dust, etc., all mess it up. Some say it is real slow even on a pretty day.

What are my options? What does it take to install a wireless hub and become a rural provider? I am surrounded by many folks looking for the same thing. Is DirectWay the only satellite service?

Thanks,
David
