Perhaps thinking about king/King would clarify. We'd see no problem in using "king" in a sentence like "If you are a king then..." or "It seems that kings can get away with anything". But if you are referencing a particcular individual, eg "King George" you ought to capitalize (particularly if he is nearby and can chop your head off).
