Linking question

I am aware that one is not allowed to put a link to a personal website within a post.

My question is, are you allowed to put links to pages that have nothing to do with you personally?

Let me clarify. If you are posting on a subject and you wish to give more information on what you are writing about, can you link to a page that explains something in more depth? Of course, it must not advertise anything within this information. It would just be to give more background, etc.

I want to make sure I get this right.

Yes, thank for that, but I have read the terms of use and only found this:

You may not post links to your site or use Able2Know for promotional purposes (both commercial and non-commercial) unless you have been granted an exception by the site administrators. The determination of what consitutes a violation of this rule is determined exclusively by Able2Know.

Now, I'm sorry if I appear a little stupid, or just plain blind, but I can't find a direct answer to my question.

Would someone be kind enough to help me out?

Thanks in advance....

Anytime you have a question about site policy, L'd think your best bet is prolly gonna be submittin' a help ticket, via either the "Help" or the "Contact Us" links in the footer of every page. I think thats pretty much what they're there for - gettin' help

But to give ya the short version here, off the toppa my head, I'd hafta say the key word is "Promotion" - in general, a website with which you have no affilliation, and which itself is neither promotional or otherwise objectionable (solicitin' funds or membership, or somethin' like porn, hate, or other illegal content or intent, for example, is prolly OK for a link. In fact, if quotin' from an article, news item, or essay on another website, its good form to provide a link to the source. Another "In General" rule-of-tbumb is that linkin' to a webpage containin' an image or other graphics file of acceptable nature (again, not porn, hate, or otherwise illegal) may or may not be OK, dependin' on the webpage itself, but linkin' directly to the image itself is prolly OK as long as the image itself is OK, and would be the preferred method. "Check out this neat website I just found", "Go to my website/blog", "Sign up (here) for (whatever)" - that sorta stuff - is just about always a no-no, it seems to me.

Hope I didn't confuse ya even more ... thats always possible when I think I'm explainin' somethin' Rolling Eyes ... I just figure a help ticket might be the way to go for a question of this sort

Great! Thank you, sir! I understand now what the "terms" are saying. It sounds like the kind of linking that I'm talking about is quite acceptable.

The reason that I did not go to 'Help' was that I thought it probably was a fairly straight-forward thing to ask someone to explain to a hapless idiot like myself, and thus avoiding bothering a mod with it. Very Happy

I doubt that sorta question would be considered a bother ... seems to me thats what the "Ask"process is all about, ya know?. I dunno, I could be wrong. I recall once havin' thought myself to have been in error, but found, on later reflection, such had not been the case Twisted Evil Laughing
