It's deserved. Once you've given the answer I can see it, and it's so bloody obvious as well, if only it was the case beforehand.

That is so often the case with cryptic clues. You have to be able to think laterally and realise that a lot of words and phrases have more than one meaning.
And I've had a lot of practice.

I've been doing these crosswords for a long time and I think when they find a clue that a large number of people get wrong they like to use it again and again, so eventually it sticks in the mind.
And google helps too.
