We carried you in our arms
On Independence Day
And now you'd throw us all aside
And put us on our way
Oh, what dear daughter 'neath the sun
Would treat a father so
To wait upon him hand and foot
And always tell him "No?"
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why am I the one who must be the thief ?
Come to me now, you know
We're so alone
And life is brief.
We pointed out the way to go
And scratched your name in sand
Though you just thought that it was nothing more
Than a place for you to stand
Now I want you to know that while you watched
You discover there was no one true
Must everybody really thought
It was a childish thing to do
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why am I the one who must be the thief ?
Come to me now, you know
We're so alone
And life is brief.
It was all very painless
When you went out to receive
All that false instruction
Which we never could believe
And now the heart is filled with gold
As if it was a purse
But oh, what kind of love is this
Which goes from bad to worse ?
Tears of rage, tears of grief
Why am I the one who must be the thief ?
Come to me now, you know
We're so alone
And life is brief.

@edgarblythe,
So, so many thanks for linking that song! It's one of those songs for me that I love but didn't know the artist or title of. And now I know!

Yay me!

No song can tear me up like that one does.

@edgarblythe,
Timeless... And very appropriate, because... it's lonely out in space...

The song is called "That Night"
In Spanish, soledad means solitude or loneliness. It's also a fairly common name given to girls, i.e. Soledad O'Brien.

Here's a rough translation of the lyrics to give an idea of their meaning. I had to fight back the tears as I was writing them.

You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover
You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover
"It's as if I was waiting for your parting moment
It's as if I was seeing my moments beside you."

You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover
You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover
She embraced me the very moment you said goodbye
It wasn't a great sadness, like going from something ok
to something greater.

"Your return I've longed for
What's more you looked very happy
In the arms of your lover
you forgot about me
Now that you've remembered
To my arms you return
I shall always be your lover
Your Soledad

And if some day you should return
to that one that had loved you
It wouldn't be the same
for she's known me too.

My Soledad
You've always pertained to me!
My Soledad
You've always pertained to me!

You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover
You shouldn't have left me that night
Because that very night I found a lover

@PUNKEY,
Harry Nilsson wrote "One," and certainly Three Dog Night had a hit with it.
