I want to do something different this year in my honors English 10 course, veering away from the dusty classics with their limited perspectives, instead offering diverse perspectives in contemporary young adult novels. I'm doing fine in finding appropriate books with female protagonists, but am struggling finding appropriate books with MALE protagonists. What I need: stand-alone novels with male (preferably non-white) protagonist, deep topic(s)/themes explored with which teens could relate, and a minimum of profanity and/or sex. If I could find one that is LGBTQ+ friendly, that would be a bonus. The sex/profanity content is what has put paid to the books I have explored so far: I need books I feel comfortable assigning to be read, rather than just checked out for personal reading. Please don't suggest _Monster_, as that is used in English 12 in my school. Any suggestions?
@MsCronk,
You will probably need to check for profanity/sex, but what about
Something Like Summer and its three sequels (
Something Like Autumn, etc)?

How about Kurt Vonnegut's Sirens of Titan? Or is that too simplistic?
