Think it's been done by Rosanne Cash and her former husband Rodney Crowell

Here are the lyrics:

It's three a.m. in the morning,
The train whistle is blowin'.
It sounds like some lonesome song got in my soul,
In my soul.
My baby spent the bank and he won't be back no more.

My baby thinks he's a train.
He makes his whistle stop, then he's gone again.
Sometimes it's hard on a poor girl's brain,
A poor girl's brain.
I'm tellin' you, boys, my baby thinks he's a train.

Locomotion's the way he moves.
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane.
My baby thinks he's a train.

Instrumental break.

Choo, choo rages on, train sound.
It's the noise that you hear when my baby hits town.
With his long hair flyin', man, he's hard to take.
What you s'posed to do when your baby thinks he's a train?

He eats money like a train eats coal.
He burns it up and leaves you in the smoke.
If you wanna catch a ride, you wait 'til he unwinds.
He's just like a train, he always gives some tramp a ride.

Locomotion's the way he moves.
He drags me 'round just like an old caboose
I'm tellin' you, girls, that man's insane.
My baby thinks he's a train.

Instrumental Break.

You could be right, pan but I saw that it was written by Leroy Preston and he was with Asleep at the Wheel.

Of course, that doesn't mean he was the first to record it!

I always think of Carole King and the beautiful songs she wrote that were almost always recorded by someone else before she began her own singing career.

If Leroy(lead singer) wrote it , then it is definitely an Asleep song and the question has been answered. We aim to please...on A2K

When I was in high school, way back in the early 70s, I worked in a bar in Tulsa, OK. that was the kind of "jam" place for other musicians when they passed through town. Whatever band was scheduled to play knew that they might have "special guests" that showed up unannounced.

I remember members of AATW showing up to play and this was a song they played. I've always loved western swing music and I think I owe it all to them!

Actually West Aussie band the Triffid's had an indie hit with a song called 'My Baby Thinks She's A Train' (off their Treeless Plain album)

It's has a sort of swamp country feel and it's not a cover.

Best version is on Triple J's Live At The Wireless (sorry kids, only ever released on vinyl)

Here's the lyrics:

My Baby Thinks She's A Train

My baby thinks she's a train
She hears voices, little voices only she can hear
She hears voices, such little voices sliding in her ear
My baby thinks she's a train
She don't know the difference between pleasure and pain
My baby thinks she's a train
She walks out the door, & she's drinking kisses like rain
Well shes a backwoods girl she don't talk pretty
She makes it quite plain she puts a dollar down on a heart
But she cannot pay one dollar down and a dollar a day........
