help downloading with ares

hi all.. i'm using the ares p2p. however, whenever i download, my connection speeds are terrible. usually 10kbps/s.. i'm using windows xp, cable connection and have a zone alarms firewall. can anyone give me suggestions?

i'm also considering switching to linux and using mozilla as a browser.. tips, hints and warnings would be appreciated.. thanks all!
