I am a rap fan myself, but I often hear people saying how crap it is. When I investigate, I find out they have only heard one song, off the top 30, by some band enjoying 15-minutes of fame (maybe 15-seconds) on MTV. The point is, most of the rap music played is censored and becomes beeps and blips, or is more hip-pop than aything else. After I show people real rap (uncensored, or just decent songs) most of them decide that rap is not so bad. My responses range from 'OK' to 'F*cking awesome'.
Really hard to read that yellow type, Makz!

As for rap, it's not just the lyrics that many people object to, it's the "sound" (some folks would even tell you that rap isn't "music" at all, bec. it lacks a melody).
Rap
Now this kids sayin that rap aint for the majors
check out the millions that been inherited by raps generators
many kids say things an turn out ta be immatators
as makz puts it 1 song has these kids bein haters
listen to the words an then u might get it
or even the beat coz they always perfected
so don't diss unless y'all studied the facts
that rap still has many more years, more than the past
in fact if u looked back at where it came from
a thousand years ago west africans used to rap songs
to keep stories and traditions alive
so thats where rap derived
brought to america when black natives where taken as slaves
only blew up in 1978
so if u want to diss rap
jus check where it came from an its stayin like that
peace.....
why are there people rapping in every thread i go into today?
The origins are not germane to whether or not it sounds like music to those whose ears wince at it.

I just don't have the ears for rap. A music format that puts that much emphasis on the lyrics seems like it should be understandable on your first or second listen through but I just can' understand it. That's the reason I don't enjoy it.

That would be an incredibly narrow view of what music is. Although it sometimes doesn't have any actual notes, hip-hop is always full of rhythm - doesn't that make it music? Is a drum not a musical instrument?

The emphasis isn't necessarily on the lyrics, just because there's no melody. Some of the best rap songs have lyrics that are just about how good the rapper is at rapping. Most of the album 'Paid in Full' by Eric B & Rakim, for example, consists of Rakim boasting about how skillful he is - but what actually makes it a fantastic album is Rakim's rhythmic precision and Eric B's virtuoso DJ-ing. Rap is more about rhythm than words, I'd say.

So I'm guessing the kids in Greece are really steeped in old African tradition. Studying the history of tribal warfare and listening to Eminem. Oops, wait, Eminem is white.

Very good point. Rap isn't necessarily about African roots. But it is ALWAYS about rhythm. Y'all.
I think that people should respect rap and any type of music. I love hip hop.
