The orignial text is this:

I understand the rest of the passage except for one sentence: "chaff Nancy about a stake and binder hedge that her mare had checked at"
If if helps, nn the novel the girl has a horse and rides a lot.
Any explannation is appreciated, thank you!

'chaff' means to tease or ridicule. 'binder hedge' I believe is an obstacle the mare (female horse) is supposed to jump over. 'checked at' means she (the horse) balked.
