I am a full-time high school teacher doing his own taxes (not that impressive as there's not that much to do). I have enlisted the help of TurboTax.
My question: I am taking a correspondence paralegal course, which is DETC approved. Is this course deductible?
Thank you.
What is "DETC"???
If the course is toward you either earning a degree or necessary for "improving job skills" then you should be able to claim it as a Qualified Education Expense. If it doens't work towards either of those then the IRS considers it as you "taking it for fun" and you can't claim it.
Depending on where it falls it could be a tax deduction or a tax credit.
Look at IRS Publication 970.

Thanks...
Thank you!!!
The IRS Publication is the one I believe I need.
DETC stands for Distance Education and Training Council - it's an accreditation body.
