The country had a chance to have a nuclear war.

Hi.

One of my friends wrote,

'Korea had some chances to have a nuclear war.'

I have some feeling that the word 'chance(s)' is usually
followed by some fortunate and positive things.

For example,

"I was lucky because I had a chance to make a lot of money.'
"I finally got the chance to pop the question.'
"She didn't miss the chance to get the job.'

Now, is 'chance' also usable with negative things, like,
'a chance to have a nuclear war'?

Well, nobody likes war, especially 'a nuclear war'.
What she meant by, probably was,

There was some possibility that Korea gets involved in a nuclear war.

So, you don't say 'a chance to lose my job', 'a chance to get a cancer' or 'a chance to get tortured'. Don't you?

I would've made my own research using online dictionaries, but I had no idea how.

Would you please help me to tell if the sentence
she wrote is weird or not?

Thank you.

@SMickey,
The sentence is indeed weirdly worded.

You are correct in your analysis-to "have a chance" means to confronted with a possibility of something very good happening.

If you want to write about the possibility of something bad occurring, you can say "There was a chance S.Korea could have been in a nuclear war".

"There was a chance" can be followed by either positive or negative things.

"To have a chance" is almost always followed by a positive thing.

One exception-if humor is involved. As in: "I had this great chance to have sex with the Mafiosi's daughter and end up hanging from a meat hook in a frozen food locker in Brooklyn."

@Blickers,
The exactly same words can, I noticed, have completely different meaning depending on the context.

Let me make up a sentence.

"Althought there was a chance of a war between those two countries, they had the chance to avoid it thanks to the successful summit talks.'

I can't thank you enough, Blickers.

@SMickey,
Because you are misdirected - I will explain.
First Nuke will strike Damascus - After that - SHTF.
