Name the Best Performers You Never Saw

Reply Sat 12 Feb, 2005 09:24 pm
Inspired by an earlier thread, are there any performers you so much wanted to see, but they passed on before you could?

In my case, I always wanted to see Harry Chapin and The Grateful Dead, but alas....

(I did get to see Three Dog night twice, but it was after Chuck Negron left the group - they were good, but not as good [maybe someday???])

How about you?

I regret never having had the opportunity to see Edit Piaff perform live.

Yeah, Piaf. Vladamir Horowitz. I never heard Perlman live.

I have had some friends of friends, a friend of Janis, for example, so I don't feel so left out of the music of my time, re rock, but I didn't get how many greats were still alive and playing then.

Thing is, I read a lot about a lot of people, and when I was younger, they seemed to be from centuries before. It's only that I'm older that I know many were still alive in my youth, not just from the world of music, but literature, and painting.

My sense of timeline has changed as my own has advanced.

That would be Lennon... but I was 1 when he was killed.

And I'm hoping to see Bowie before he retires/dies, but the way things are going, I don't know ;-)

YES, absolutely!!

Elvis - When I grew up, Elvis was known to be in his ivory tower, and I had never seen him "live" in concerts, not even on TV. The only thing I knew was Elvis' movies that they showed to us from time to time on TV. I recently saw a DVD called "Elvis The Way It Is". He was just fabulous, I think there is no singer better than him, even today. He CAN sing anything. Shocked

Gilbert Becaud - I "discovered" him only recently. He died in 2001. I am so frustrated!!! He is truly the best performer that I know of.

It is strange how some artists are great, but because one does not pay attention (too busy) or never heard of him/her (through someone else), one just misses the opportunity to know them.

This is a good thread to make us "discover" artists we may potentially like. Smile

I saw Miles several years ago. I'm telling you, if you never witnessed Miles, you've never witnessed cool.

The Sex Pistols. The Velvet Underground. The Stooges. Billie Holiday. Woody Guthrie. Blind Willie Johnson, or Robert Johnson. T-Bone Walker or, wait - Joe Turner and Pete Johnson performing Roll 'Em Pete in their Kansas City joint. Josephine Baker! Ray Noble's Orchestra with Al Bowlly singing. Frank Sinatra. Johnny Cash too, yes, and Edith Piaf. Aleksandr Baslachev. Oum Kalsoum.

Public Enemy, before I did get to see 'em (having been banished from Amsterdam to a half-empty, gloomy hall in Arnhem after their previous concert, they were uninspired). And I woulda loved to be at one of those original acid warehouse parties in '87.

Elvis Costello & REM - both performances observed from seats very close to the stage. I'm sure being able to clearly see, as well as hear, made both performances very memorable ones.

Olga, those concerts you did or didnt see? Its kind of confusing, these two threads ("Best Performers You Ever Saw" and "Best Performers You Never Saw") existing side by side!
