Studying hard is the only way by which we can hope to excel in our studies.

Is the part in bold OK?

Yes--it is not only acceptable, the "by which" portion is necessary from a grammatical point of view. One might say: "Studying hard is the only way we can hope to excel in our studies." However, that is informal, and would not be acceptable in a written passage.
