This is a very interesting question. Even more so considering this example matches many others where it is demanded (more or less robustly) that everyone outside the faith abide by the rules of that faith. For example, "Do not profane the sacred by using words or phrases like 'Goddamn mother ******* jesus christ'"

Why not? Where's the damage? Presumably, an omnipotent diety isn't going to get his fragile feelings hurt. And being all-knowing, he would have seen it coming anyway. So god is going to be fine regardless of "profanities" voiced.

What is threatened is consensus, social order and personal certainty.

But I think many of us understand that religion is much less about god and more about group organization and psychological equanimity.

OK, a serious response, just for a moment.

Both Ipsos Reid in Canada and Pew Research in the U.S. report that about 10% of all of those who report a christian confession, as well as regular attendance at worship services, state that they do not believe there is a god. I suggest that they adhere to the confession and participate in the church activities precisely because they enjoy the sense of community.
