There are a total of 500 books on the shelves.
There is a total of 500 books on the shelves.
Are both sentences correct?
Thanks.
@tanguatlay,
No--the subject is "
a total of 500 books," which is singular. Therefore, only the second sentence is correct. Although there
are 500 books, there
is only one total.
Total is ...
Totals are ....
In total, there are five hundred books.
Thanks, Punkey and centrox.

This is the correct statement.
@tanguatlay,
I think the 2nd one is correct. Because, here the target is 'a total', not ''books''.
