For people who are new to this kind of board, the background PM'ing can be a way of getting some help they aren't ready to 'post' for. Oh well. One board's loss is another board's gain. <shrug>

Exactly how I see it too, ehBeth. I can understand the "need" to control spam. I just don't see the need to have hundreds and hundreds of posts before you have the privilege.

It's frustrating to know that when I get to 500 posts. I still probably won't be able to pm.

Was ready to walk away from the board myself last week so I know exactly how your friend feels. Will stick it out awhile, but probably not much longer.

I do thank Montana and Roger for helping me reach out to mom5 though! Smile

Thorman - Roger and Letty are most definitely here!

Brooke - it's a tough call for a board. I was pretty angry when my friend lost his ability to respond to PM's. He came here looking for some help, and it's not going to happen now.

Thorman! Wonderful to see you again, and especially for you:

FIT THE FIRST

The Landing
`JUST the place for a Snark!' the Bellman cried,
As he landed his crew with care;
Supporting each man on the top of the tide
By a finger entwined in his hair.

`Just the place for a Snark! I have said it twice:
That alone should encourage the crew.
Just the place for a Snark! I have said it thrice:
What I tell you three times is true.

i've been alluded to as a 'shark' in reference to my online behaviors and ability to lure a newbie into a seething socio/political/ideological debate and then letting go with both guns blazing.

but what the heck is a snark??

Thorman, do you recall a discussion on the Realm about the statement:

What I tell you three times is true. You had an interesting interpretation. You remarked that if a couple was seen in public together three times, that meant they were officially a couple.

I had no idea where that statement originally came from, and I found that it was said by Lewis Carroll. We all realize that Carroll made up words that were wonderfully expressive, but had no meaning at all. So it is with the word "snark" .

EhBeth and Brooke, I have to interject that as much as the board mods and administration may well regard some folks, the site is not set up as a first strike help line. Having pm's at all is a courtesy, and that's been sorely tested - it is getting to be more and more courteous, almost insanely so, for them to do it, given the aggravation. Being irritated at a failure to get privilege immediately is understandable, but not appropriate.

I'm not speaking for the site, just me, a subscriber.

Thorman, we may have met before, I used to hang around Abuzz for a dense posting year or more, but I don't remember. Anyway, welcome here at a2k, didn't mean the privilege comment in any way to you.

i'm just annoyed that i can't directly contact craven. i'd heard that he was moving to the U.S. (again? - if memory is correct), but there were options he was juggling and some other issues he was dealing with - i have a genuine interest in finding out how some have resolved. i'd kinda like to pm some of the 'oldies' and see how they've been. but, i guess i'll just have to wait.

Thorman, Craven came to the U.S. because he was considering joining a branch of the service so that he would qualify for help in pursuing his education. Instead, he opted to go into the private sector, and in his spare time he maintains the site.

yeah, i remember that. i didn't want to go and discuss his personal stuff on open boards anymore than i'd want him to discuss stuff that we'd discussed privately. hence the pm issue. you, i'd talk about it with, cause you and c have been aquaintences (sp??) for a long while.

here's an interesting question -- how can i give out my email to some of the old-timers via this site without making it available to everybody??

Craven is, as his Location box says, in San Diego.

You might want to set up an email address purely for that purpose, Thorman?

And - space it out when you post it - so the spam bots cannot read it?

good idea, i'll do that. that way i can give out the 'real' email to 'real' people and the "spam bots" will be foiled.

((there's something orwellian in the fact that you have to go to great lengths to protect yourself from these spam nazzis that even the government can't or won't [free speech related issues] protect you from.))

almost makes me want to devote my time and energy into becoming a super-hacker, just to fight them at their own game. (of course, once you got so far into the quagmire, it would probably be aol-time-warner sitting in the throne room on the top level of the dark tower.)
