Honky Tonk tunes

Reply Thu 27 Jan, 2005 06:08 pm
I posted a song to a different thread and as I was thinking about the song "Honky Tonk" came to mind.

Growing up in Texas, a Honky Tonk was a roadhouse type club where they had live music. But really, Honky Tonk is a style of music too - a country rock blues zydeco sort of thing. I can't really describe it but I know it when I hear it.

"Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms" was the song I posted to the other thread.

Now I'm thinking "Aimee" (by Lonestar) and "My Baby Thinks She's A Train" (Asleep at the Wheel) would count as modernish Honky Tonk tunes.

I really like all three of those songs very much and thinking about them has really put me in the mood to hear some feel good get up and dance a while Honky Tonk.

Can you recommend any other Honky Tonk songs?

Ahh, Honky Tonk! I love it. Reminds me of Hank Williams, Ray price and George Jones.

And, of course, Lefty Frizzell - If You've Got the Money I've Got the Time

If you Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Time.

If you Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Ti-ime
We'll go honky-tonkin'
And we're gonna have a time
We'll make all the night spots
Dance to the music, fine
If You Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Time.

Well, there ain't no use to tarry
So let's start out toni-ight
We'll spread joy, boy, oh boy
And we'll spread it right
We'll have more fun, baby
All the way down the line
If You Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Time.

[INST: & THEN BACKUP SINGERS]

We'll make all the night spots
Dance to the music, fine
If you Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Time.

If You Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Ti-ime
We'll go honky-tonkin'
And we're gonna have a time
Bring along your Cadillac
Leave my old wreck behind
If You Got The Money, Honey
I've Got The Time.

Well, we'll go honky-tonkin'
Make ev'ry club in to-own
We'll go to the park where it's dark
We won't fool around
But if you run short of money, honey
I'll run short of time
'Cause you with no more money, honey
I've no more Time.

Oh good one, squinney!

I love Honky Tonk too. I just haven't really thought about it as a classification of music in a long time. Great Honky Tonk songs were the ones where everyone would get up to dance.

I thought of a few more that might qualify:

"Casino Queen" (Wilco)

"On the Bayou"

"You Never Can Tell" (Chuck Berry)

A lot of stuff by Lynard Skynard would probably qualify. "Sweet Home Alabama" is waaaay Honky Tonk.

I tend to think of it as further back than Lynard skynard, but you are right. The sound is there.

Dad has sat. radio in his truck. When visiting last summer he would tune to a station in Texas that sounded like they were actually broadcasting from a Honky tonk. Very cool the way they did it, complete with beer bottle sounds, etc.

Wild Side of Life

Recorded by Hank Thompson

You wouldn't read my letter if I wrote you
You asked me not to call you on the phone.
But there's something I'm wanting to tell you
So I wrote it in the words of this song.

(chorus)
I didn't know God made honky tonk angels
I should have known you'd never make a wife
You gave up the only one that ever loved you
And went back to the wild side of life.

The glamor of the gay night life has lured you
To the places where the wine and liquor flows.
There you wait to be anybody's baby
And forget the only love you'll ever know.

: It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels - Kitty Wells

As I sit here tonight the jukebox playin'
The tune about the wild side of life
As I listen to the words you are sayin'
It brings memories when I was a trusting wife

It wasn't God who made Honky Tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men think they're still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong

It's a shame that all the blame is on us women
It's not true that only you men feel the same
From the start most every heart that's ever broken
Was because there always was a man to blame

It wasn't God who made Honky Tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men think they're still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong

Hi edgar - great Honky Tonk!

Thanks, squinney! I'll sneak into Mr. B's computer and give that station a listen. I don't get a sound card on mine (dagnabit) because I would most certainly (and rightfully) be accused of never getting anything done.

I really think of all kinds of things as Honky Tonk - maybe because I started hitting the Honky Tonks in the 80s - and the songs I'm remembering were popular then.

How about Loretta Lynn's "You Ain't Woman Enough (To Steal My Man)?

Or Koko Taylor (I know she's really the Blues but the Blues most definately have their place in Honky Tonk) "You Can Have My Husband (But Please Don't Mess With My Man)?

I love those two back to back, edgar!

Dad used to sing the first one.

One of my younger brothers broke his teeth on this stuff, too. The first song we heard him sing was when he was two, sitting in his car seat. He started singing to himself... Take da wibbon fwom yer hair. Sake it yoose and yet it fall. Sang the whole thing and moved right on to Satin sheets to lie on.

When you are sad and lonely and have no place to go
Call me up, sweet baby, and bring along some dough
And we'll go honky tonkin', honky tonkin'
Honky tonkin', honey baby
We'll go honky tonkin' 'round this town.

When you and your baby have a fallin' out
Just call me up sweet mama and we'll go steppin' out
And we'll go honky tonkin', honky tonkin'
Honky tonkin', honey baby
We'll go honky tonkin' 'round this town.

We're goin' to the city - to the city fair
If you go to the city then you will find me there
And we'll go honky tonkin', honky tonkin'
Honky tonkin', honey baby
We'll go honky tonkin' 'round this town.

Repeat first verse

one from dolly parton

Bartender won't you pour me a very strong drink?
And just keep it coming till I don't have to think?
And point out some cowboy that might want to dance?
And make sure I get home if you see that I can't?

I loved him, he left me for a girl half my age.
I relate to each sad song that ol' jukebox has played.
I listen to Haggard, old Hank, and George Jones,
But why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?

Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?
About the heartaches and the tough breaks,
And the men that's done 'em wrong.
There are others just like me that are hurtin' to the bone,
So why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?

Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?
Honky tonk angels are just queens without thrones.
Judge not lest you be judged, who can cast the first stone?
Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?

Hey, bartender won't you pour another strong drink?
Just keep it coming till I don't have to think?
Could you point out some cowboy that might want to dance?
And make sure I get home if you see that I can't?

(All you lonely women sing):
Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?
About the heartaches and the tough breaks,
And all the men that's done us wrong.
There's a whole lotta women I know would sing along,
So why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?

Why don't more women sing honky tonk songs?

Woman Walk The Line

(Emmylouy Harris / Paul Kennerley)

Don't bother sittin' at my table
Just because I'm on my own
Yes I'm a woman and I'm lonely
But that don't mean I can't be strong

Once again he's not beside me
And tonight he won't be coming home
So I just need a place to miss my baby
When he goes out to do me wrong

Tonight I wanna do some drinkin'
I came to listen to the band
Yes I'm as good as what you're thinkin'
But I don't wanna hold your hand
And I know I'm lookin' lonely
But ther's nothin' here I wanna find
It's just the way of a woman
When she goes out to walk the line

Every night's a little longer
Than the one that came before
But when I hear them sing a sad song
I know just what I'm cryin' for

I don't wanna stay home waitin'
Don't have to wonder where he's been
He'll be someone else's baby
Before he's in my arms again

Honky Tonk Man - Johnny Horton

Well, I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop.
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old juke box.
When my money's all gone, I'm on the telephone,
Singing: "Hey, hey, Mama, can your Daddy come home?"

Well, now I'm living wild and dangerously,
But I've got plenty of company.
When the moon comes up and the sun goes down,
Well, I can't wait to see the lights of town.

'Cause I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop.
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old juke box.
When my money's all gone, I'm on the telephone,
Singing: "Hey, hey, Mama, can your Daddy come home?"

Well, I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop.
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old juke box.
When my money's all gone, I'm on the telephone,
Singing: "Hey, hey, Mama, can your Daddy come home?"

Hey now, a pretty little girl and a jug of wine,
Well, that's what it takes to make a honky tonk time.
The juke box moaning those honky tonk sounds,
I can't wait to lay my money down.

'Cause I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop.
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old juke box.
When my money's all gone, I'm on the telephone,
Singing: "Hey, hey, Mama, can your Daddy come home?"

'Cause I'm a honky tonk man and I can't seem to stop.
I love to give the girls a whirl to the music of an old juke box.
When my money's all gone, I'm on the telephone,
Singing: "Hey, hey, Mama, can your Daddy come home?"

Hey Good Lookin - Hank Williams

Hey, hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin'
how's about cookin' somethin' up with me ...
hey, sweet baby, don't you think maybe
we could find us a brand new recipe. ...

I got a hot rod ford and a two dollar bill
And I know a spot right over the hill
there's soda pop and the dancin's free
So if you wanna have fun come along with me.

Say hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin'
how's about cookin' somethin' up with me.

I'm free and ready so we can go steady
How's about savin' all your time for me
No more lookin', I know I've been (*tooken)
How's about keepin' steady company.

I'm gonna throw my date book over the fence
And find me one for five or ten cents.
I'll keep it 'til it's covered with age
'cause I'm writin' your name down on ev'ry page.

Say hey, good lookin', whatcha got cookin'
How's about cookin' somethin' up with me.

Honky Tonk Merry-Go-Round

(Patsy Cline)

I'm on a honky tonk merry-go-round,
Makin ever' spot in town,
Startin' out early, comin' home late,
Ever' night with a brand-new date!
I'm on a honky tonk merry-go-round,
Actin' like a foolish clown,
Still racin' those blues that you left with me,
Wond'rin' if I'll ever be free.
Round and around and around I go,
Ridin' high and feelin' low,
Round and around just like a top,
Well, I'm a-gettin' dizzy, but I can't stop!
I'm on a honky tonk merry-go-round,
Actin' like a foolish clown,
Still racin' those blues that you left with me,
Wond'rin' if I'll ever be free.
Round and around and around I go,
Ridin' high and feelin' low,
Round and around just like a top,
Well, I'm a-gettin' dizzy, but I can't stop!
I'm on a honky tonk merry-go-round,
Actin' like a foolish clown,
Still racin' those blues that you left with me,
Wond'rin' if I'll ever be free,
Yes, I'm wond'rin' if I'll ever be free.

San Antonio Rose - Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys

Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San Antone,
Where in dreams I live with a memory,
Beneath the stars all alone.

It was there I found beside the Alamo,
Enchantment strange as the blue up above
A moon-lit pass that only she would know,
Still hears my broken song of love.
Moon in all your splendor, know only my heart,
Call back my Rose, Rose of San Antone.
Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart
Speak once again of my love, my own.

Broken song, empty words I know,
Still live in my heart all alone
For that moon-lit pass by the Alamo,
And Rose, my Rose of San Antone.

Vern Gosdin is very underappreciated in country music. Coming from a Bluegrass family(The Gosdins) in California he never got the acclaim but he sure can sing. Here's a honky tonk tune he recorded.

SET 'EM UP JOE
Vern Gosdin

They got a vintage victrola 1951
Full of my favorite records that I grew up on
They got ole Hank and Lefty and there's B24
Set 'em up Joe, they're playin Walkin the Floor
Set 'em up Joe, they're playin Walkin the Floor

Chorus

I'm gonna spend the night like every night before
Play a new tune and I'll play 'em some more
I've gotta have a shot of them old troubadors
Set 'em up Joe, they're playin Walkin the Floor
Set 'em up Joe, they're playin Walkin the Floor

All my neon neighbors they like what I play
Cause they've heard it every night since you've walked away
Every day they replace old
Cause every night I run a needle through Walking the Floor
Every night I run a needle through Walking the Floor

YESTERDAY'S GIRL
by Hank Thompson

YOU TOLD HER LIES AS HER STARRY EYES
LOOKED UP IN ADMIRATION
YOU PAINTED SCENES AND LOVELY DREAMS
WITH ALL YOUR TEMPTATION
YOU SPOKE OF THINGS LIKE WEDDING RINGS
AND PROMISED HER THE WORLD
FOR NO CAUSE AT ALL YOU LET HER FALL
AND NOW SHES YESTERDAY'S GIRL

YOU THINK IT'S SMART TO LURE THE HEART
OF A GIRL WHOSE LIPS YOU KISS
IS IT JUST A GAME TO ADD HER NAME
TO YOUR BROKEN HEARTED LIST
YOU'VE LOVED SOME LONG, YOU'VE LOVED SOME WRONG
YOU PROMISED EACH THE WORLD
EACH CAME TO BE JUST A MEMORY
AND ANOTHER YESTERDAY'S GIRL

DON'T YOU SOMETIMES FEEL THAT LOVE IS REAL
THE GREATEST THING IN LIFE
NOT ONE ROMANCE YOU GAVE THE CHANCE TO BE
YOUR CHERISHED WIFE
YOU CHEAT AND LIE YOU MAKE THEM CRY
AND PROMISE EACH THE WORLD
AND ONE BY ONE THEY EACH BECOME
ANOTHER YESTERDAY'S GIRL

WHEN AUTUMN FALLS AND YOU RECALL
THE THINGS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN
THEN YOU'LL PAUSE AND SEE YOU CAUSED
THE GRIEF THATS DEEP WITHIN
WHEN YOUR OLD AND LOVE GROWS COLD
I BET YOU'D GIVE THE WORLD
TO JUST RELIVE TO TAKE AND GIVE
THE LOVE OF A YESTERDAY'S GIRL
