Should it be 'the' instead of 'a'?

Nichikan Shonin was a High Priest who showed us and taught us the importance of faith, practice and study by carrying this out by himself.

1. Should it be 'the' instead of 'a'?
2. Is 'us' needed? I think it is redundant because of the 'us' after 'showed'.
