was or am

When I come into the classroom, I find that I am the first one. Then I say to myself, " Good, I am the first!"

After a while, most of the students arrive, then I tell my friend, "Hey, I am the first one to arrive today!"

A moment later, the teacher comes. She asks,"Who was the first to come today?"

Should it be "was" instead of "am"?

Thanks.

You could use either. The teacher could equally well have said "Who is the first person to arrive today?"

She asks,"Who was the first to come today?"

I would match the verb of the question: "I was"
