blocking sites without software.

Is it possible to block a website on a computer without using outside software, such as an ini file or something like that? I've heard it was possible but I can't find how.

You can PM the answer to me if you prefer. Wouldn't want to give any tips to kids on how to hack.

Use the HOSTS file (usually located in windows/system32/drivers/etc.

Just point the domain at your local ip.

e.g

Code:# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 badsite.com # this sends the request to your localhost ip

Once again, thanks for the help. I'm assuming that for this to work you have to be running a web server on your machine. Because I'm currently on a machine that doesn't have a web server installed, when I do a search *host*.* in the system32 folder I find nothing.

I am running IIS server on mu computer at home so I will try it there too. Thanks.

Depending what OS your running,

Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Windows 2K = C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Win 98\ME = C:\WINDOWS

roverroad,

You don't need to be running a server for it to work. Don posted the paths to the files (based on default os install settings) and if your file isn't there then you can create one.

You may need to enable viewing of system files to see the HOSTS file.
