Hi there,
Im considering doing some PC repair in my free time (which I have a lot of) to gain extra cash. Im at Uni studying computing, and working in a bar at night, so im free all day, and im not getting enough hours anymore at work. rather than find a new job (theres nothing in this area!) I thought I might stick up an ad offering to do pc repair etc.
Now I dont plan on spending the rest of my life oing this, ideally it will just be until the summer when I will graduate and get a decent job in the industry.
So, my question is: Am i right in thinking that I can earn a certain amount (8k ?) before I need to register as a business and pay tax etc? Also how do I go about registering a business and what costs and requirements are there?
Is there anywhere I can go to get decent (preferably free) advice, such as a website or organisation etc?

I know for sure that you have to register with the Inland Revenue (to get a Certificate) regardless of the level of income you will receive.
I work at the Jobcentre, we have lots of information on the start up of self employment. I can't get it 'till tomorrow.
And don't forget to pay your own SE NI.
Alternatively, you could call in to your local Jobcentre. They will give you info on start up grants etc. This is not my area...but I will post you some useful contacts as soon as I can.

Smorgs is right you do need to register with Inland reveneue.Apparently they are very nice and help alot.
