The past couple of years I have seen all these coloring books geared towards adults. Even one day when I was in the bookstore, there were these tables set up and these grown adults men and women were sitting there coloring. I listened in and it appeared this was a coloring book club.

I do remember years ago when my kids were very young going to a Kids’ convention fair. Sort of a trade show but with kid stuff. And one doctor had a booth set up with all these coloring pages and places for the kids to sit and color. She explained to me that it is great way for the kids to have a quiet calming place and coloring allows them to relax.

Zoom forward and my daughter is a teen. She is having “friend” issues – mean girl stuff to the point she was faking sick and crying about not wanting to go to school. I brought her in late and met with the prinicpal and he referred us to a counselor. We met with her and she talked out the issues about handling a mean girl and so forth. One thing they gave her some passes if she feels she needs to get away, she can come down there and can meet with her or just go to this room and color.

So is coloring just the newest popluar thing or does it really hold some sort of calming destressing? I know often times I joke around – but I am really asking this time – does anyone color? Does it really help? Or it is just a fad that is going to fade?

It likely does help in easing away the stress. During the time of coloring, other thoughts leave. Is it a fad? Time will tell.

Over the years I have used various methods of destressing. Lego building blocks for example. At other times my method has been to take a huge piece of paper (the size of a desk blotter or larger) and drawn mapped out communities, complete with libraries, court houses, schools, stores. All of this helps me forget the troubles.

Just about anything which can safely help the mind go to a comfort zone helps.

@Linkat,
I think it just takes your mind off things. My sister works as a school psychologist and uses with her students. She says it helps a lot.

One fine day, many years ago, I discovered that the purple crayons did not taste like grape. I was highly stressed.

@Ubert,
Yes my daughter used one of her passes when she felt she needed a break. I asked her what she did - she said she went down and just colored.

I am hoping some of these talks and maybe the coloring is helping her. I was at least able to get her to school today without any tears and fighting.

And who knows maybe I will pick up a book for me. I could use some de-stresser

@Linkat,
sooooo 2012

a few of my dance friends really got into it for a while

now it seems almost mainstream - you can even get some very nice ones at the dollar stores (books not pencils)

good pencils make all the difference

___

about 3 (4?) years ago a bunch of us took colouring books and pencils to a pub - we weren't the only ones colouring - it was fun, colouring, drinking and chatting.

This year knitting's the thing.
