"I wonder what is in the box."

When quoting or summarising a question or query the noun-verb order is reversed.

For example, Mother asked, "Where are you going?"

In reported speech, it would be Mother asked where I was going?

I believe there are cases where the noun-verb order is NOT reversed.

For example, I wonder "What is in the box?" would be reported as

"I wonder what is in the box." (Reversal of noun-verb order is not needed.)

This is easy to understand because I cannot report it by reversing the noun-verb order.

I cannot write "I wonder what in the box is."

I remember seeing a couple of sentences which could be reported without changing the noun-verb order, and they are not as simple to understand as the above example. But I cannot recall them. Those examples caused me problems because I didn't understand why there was no need to change the noun-verb order.

Could someone give me one or two such examples, please? Thanks.
