What is the difference between 'authored' and 'wrote'?

I have seen both words used as a verb, but I would like to know the difference between them.

Thanks.

@tanguatlay,
They're pretty close to being synonyms. Authored is usually reserved for works that have been published, even if it's self-publishing or an academic journal. But a lot of English speakers use the words interchangeably.

@tanguatlay,
What Jespah said. Authoring means writing entailing thorough editing and vetting, especially in preparation for publication. One authors a book or a screenplay, for instance, but not a school essay.

Also a piece of work produced collaboratively by more than one person is often said to be authored.
