Should it be "From then on" or "From then onwards"?

David likes to joke, even with his parents. One day, his father told him to stop acting like a clown. From then on / onwards he never joked with his parents.

1. Should it be "From then on" or "From then onwards"?
2. Is "he never joked" correctly used in the sentence?

Many thanks in advance.

@tanguatlay,
Both "on" and "onwards" are acceptable. "He never joked" is used correctly in the sentence.
