English grammar: usage of "that"

Hi all,
Should I alsways add "that" in the sentences like this
"There is nothing that can be done at this stage"?
I used to write "There is nothing can be done at this stage", but I get always corrected by my boss who means it is a mistake. Thank you!

Yes, "that" is part of the restrictive clause, "that can be done."
