Because if we let you delete your account, then we have to let everyone delete their account. Think about what that means for the site.

Let me explain it this way.

Every time you make a post here, you put a record in a database. This post is attached to your name (because you made it). People likely responded to your posts. Deleting your posts woudn't be fair since it would ruin the responses of other people.

Your account consists of a row in the account table in the database. It is pretty simple, but it says that you exist and when you signed up etc. Without this row in the account database, the name in your posts that you wrote won't make sense (and may kill one of poor hamsters who run this site).

If you pretend that your account is deleted (meaning you stop posting) it has the exact same effect of actually deleting your account (whatever that means). Your request is meaningless. If you don't want to post any more, just stop posting.

This site doesn't send you email unless you specifically ask it too. No problem there.

Which is kind of ironic since you literally hadn't asked it ... therefore... you have no reason to worry that people will find out that you wanted to ask whatever the question was in the first place.
