The most I've ever been impressed by a songsmith isn't what you would think given where I was born and bred, I.E. the heart of the Beatles county.
I was most impessed by Roy Orbison. Why? because his songs came from his very soul, when you are sixteen and the most beautiful girl on earth has just told you that she doesn't want to see you anymore, try listening to "It's over"
Listen to the wonderful lyric of "Smile" by Nat king cole, It's just been re-done by Westlife, and very well I must admit.
Or the wonderful lyric of "Answer me" again by Nat king cole
Every generation thinks that the best songs were written in their youth, and with fair reason, the power of song is about emotions.
For me the above is what I'll treasure.
The beatles were damn good, but they didn't have the heart rending quality of Orbison or King Cole.
Then again, I am a softy
