Some people have "innate tolerance" to heroin. This is thought to be genetic, I believe. They can still die of an overdose though. People with some medical conditions are affected differently by drugs. For example, people with migraine, irritable bowel syndrome, and fibromyalgia can find that even strong marijuana/cannabis does not affect them very much or at all. For cocaine, one condition that works this way is ADD. Also, it's a fact that some people without a condition just plain don't feel very much of a 'buzz' from coke. I am one of them. I have tried it exactly twice in my life, both times (I was much younger than I am now) I was at rich people's parties and when the white stuff came out I was invited to have a line or two. Both times I was saying to people "when will it start working?" and they were all giggling and saying "Are you serious? I'm off my face! It's good stuff!" etc. I had sniffed similar quantities to them. Some people say it has a "subtle" effect. Well, bully for them. All I could say (and still do) is that I can't see why people would pay money to get and take it. Importantly, even if it made me feel like I had died and gone to heaven, I still wouldn't take it, because I now know that cocaine has an effect on the heart muscle tissues of everyone who takes it, whether they get high or not. People aged 20 have dropped dead of a heart attack from taking it, sometimes their first time. Multiple uses can cause irreversible heart damage. A friend of mine who liked a bit of coke died aged 50 from a heart attack that came out of the blue. I expect some people reading this will think I am an old fart who is peddling anti-drug bullshit. OK. Be my guest.

Get wise! For God's sake! You are doing things that could kill you or get you serious jail time, and possibly mixing with people who could do likewise.

This is a point worth ramming home. Heroin does two things - it makes people feel high and it depresses their breathing. Repeated use brings an effect called 'tolerance'. That means you need more and more to get you high. The trouble is, the tolerance to the breathing thing doesn't grow as fast. You can end up in a situation where the dose that gets you acceptably high is very close to the dose that would kill you. Similarly, cocaine tolerance can lead to taking amounts that are very dangerous. Let's not forget barbiturates ("downers"). In the same way as I have outlined, tolerance to the mood-altering effects develops rapidly with repeated use, but, tolerance to the lethal effects develops more slowly. They aren't called "hard" drugs for nothing. Are you really anxious to wear a pine overcoat?
