In addition to the main forum, there's private messaging, off-site email, instant messaging via Yahoo, AIM, MSN, etc. I just noticed A2K has a chat room link also. Does anyone actually use all of these back channels as part of their regular A2K routine?

I PM once in a blue moon. Never use the chat site on A2K................I am not a paying member, so I can't. I won't subscribe to any Messenger sites, as I am concerned about security.
I have a cellphone with rollover minutes. I have collected a bunch, if I want to talk to someone, I can do so to my heart's content.
