Is nothing sacred?

Researchers sound childhood obesity alarm on popular school fundraiser

Bay State schools are participating in a fundraising program that rewards students for purchasing sugar-laden foods and makes children brand ambassadors for products that contribute to childhood obesity, according to researchers from Harvard and MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

The doctor said she was prompted to take a deeper look at the program when her daughter, who attends elementary school in Brookline, asked to buy a box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch at the grocery store so she could take the label to her school.

“She said there was a competition in school, and the class who brought in the most box tops would get a pizza and ice cream party,” Taveras said. “School is an environment where children expect adults are doing the best they can to provide the highest-quality foods. It’s paradoxical.”

@Linkat,
There are also several items with no sugar in them. If the program is eliminated then it is the children who will suffer.

Looking at the list (partial?) of the items available for clipping boxtops, the program should be applauded. If an item with sugar is purchased, it's up to the parent or guardian to keep the total eaten at a time, to a reasonable quantity.

What's not nutritious about pizza? It's one of my favorite fruits. Go for the pizza!

By the way, there is an evolutionary imperative to eat fats and sugars. Sugars are stored, if the individual is well enough fed, as fat. In the lean times of winter or the rainy season, stored fat could keep people alive. It should be obvious that this was an evolutionary factor, as those with a sweet tooth and a love of bacon had a better survival chance. This was especially true of the so-called white people, who lived in the periglacial regions of Eurasia in the last ice age.

Dog save us from the new Puritans. I believe you have said your daughter is involved in sports--regular exercise goes a long way to mitigate the effects of high calorie diets. Listening to academics who are trying to justify their jobs, however, burns no calories.

@Sturgis,
That whole thing is stupid - my daughter's class won and they got a pizza party.

We had the whole extended family clipping box tops - many of these things are for trash bags and other stuff - we had them from our refried beans. There are also cereals that do not have much sugar.

The schools have raised a lot of money simply by asking families to bring these in - I didn't buy stuff simply for the box tops - if my kid asked for something that I didn't approve of I would simply say no. I just clipped those box tops off anything I happen to buy and stiff we ended up with hundreds after having other family members just do the same thing.

You cannot believe how much a school can get with these things - and then parent volunteers work with the school to send all the stuff in. It helps keep costs down for things like computers and field trips that the school gets a little more money for.

@Setanta,
Yes she is involved in sports but alas she has not been able to play sports for 5 months and will be out for another 4 months - torn ACL - surgery and now PT.

At least she is in good company with the likes of Julian Edelman.
