A common phenomenon in some countries, especially in the United States, is the search for heroes and the deification of celebrities. The psychological need to have heroes and celebrities. It is a culture that acts on the mentality of the people from childhood. it is necessary beware not to create pariahs, those called losers. Celebrities are not gods, they are people like us.

@dhonandthirtinu,
Common? Nope.
Culture? The US has tons of cultures.
Lots of us don't call everyone we don't like a loser.
Of course celebrities aren't gods. What a silly notion.

If you are trying to pin the behavior of a subset of tweens and teens on the other 250 million+ people in the United States, your hypothesis is laughably flawed.

@jespah,
It may have been a bit overstated. But in the US there does exist the elevation of celebrities to idol status and the tendency to participate in veritable cults of personality. As a society it seems to me we equally relish building famous people up to impossible expectation and tearing them down when their human failings inevitably appear.

A lot of Greek Mythology reads like celebrity tabloid coverage.

@dhonandthirtinu,

The United States led the world in the electronic communication revolution and in such phenomena as broadcast networks. Since it has been the world's largest market for a long time, the movie, television and music industries here were the first to find out the advantages of promoting an artist's career from the beginning and promoting it endlessly. Our media is saturated with celebrity promotion, and there is a whole industry devoted to how to promote a performer or anyone who has done something notable. The financial payoff to anyone who gets even a modicum of success in the media is huge.

It won't be long, though, until the rest of the world catches up. The science of finding out who people want to see and how to make money off that fact grows more advanced every year.

Not just America.

At least 23 people have been killed in violent protests over the rape conviction of a popular religious leader in north India.
The victims are believed to be Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh's followers. Angry supporters rampaged through Panchkula town, near Chandigarh.
About 2,500 of Singh's followers have been arrested, police said.
Earlier, his devotees smashed cars and set media vans alight, saying he was innocent.
More than 200,000 of his followers had flocked to the Chandigarh area ahead of Friday's verdict.
