. WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush gave congressional leaders a classified briefing Wednesday on plans for a possible war with Iraq as the administration argued that a new audiotape purportedly by Osama bin Laden proves a relationship between the Iraqi regime and al Qaeda.
Do you believe that Bin Laden tape proves the relationship between al Qaeda and Iraq as Washington would have us believe? Or just a pep talk and the affirmation that the enemy of my enemy is my friend and nothing more.
In the mind of Bush (there's a double oxymoron for you) yes - to the rest of the world, no!
No not in my opinion. Osama refers to Saddam as an infidel and then he refers to a united or one Arabia (my words) which alludes to the pre WWI era when these countries did not exist as opposed to the countries which now make up the Middle East which were negotiated by Europe and the US to keep the oil flowing.
The different religious sects in the Middle East preclude any firm alliances between any of the various countries and even within the various countries, again my opinion. There is one common enemy in Osama's belief and that is the people of Western Europe and the United States and their descendants. Osama has only one goal to get rid of Western influence in the area.
That is my take anyway. If this were a Bridge game I would say that the US has been trumped because of a failed finesse and a squeeze play will finish us off as leader of the free world.
My fears also! <sigh>
Must have big change in Finances and Military power first, but Bush seems to be pursuing this goal, also!
Truthfully, I'm nowhere near convinced that the tape is authentic. The timing is odd; the manner of presentation was odd; some Arabic speakers are saying that the accent is wrong in places.
Was it manufactured by the CIA, hmmmmmmm; we will never know! Maybe we are in the twilight zone! Or, could this be one of Rumps deceptive moves?
As someone in one of the articles I recently perused indicated, Osama would probably REALLY LIKE a war between the Great Satan US and infidel Iraq. Two enemies going at it and Osama standing by to reap the propaganda and material advantage that comes of all the anticipated Arab rage-- more recruits, more money, more sympathizers. The tape therefore is probably genuine IMO and Osama more clever than I'd previously been inclined to believe.
I think one has to keep in mind two pieces of history -- two oddities (given the present situation): the relationship (business, social) of the Bush family and the bin Ladens is much closer than any some would like to think exists between bin Laden and Saddam. And of course the relationship of the Bush family to the CIA is not to be dismissed.
The Tape is quite probably legitimate ... but really offers nothing new. Osama doesn't like The US. Osama doesn't like some Middle Eastern and other Administrations. Osama fancies himself a holyman. Osama expresses solidarity with and requests solidarity from The Arab Street, even Socialists and other apostates, in the sacred conflict with The Infidel.
I do find it a bit amusing that Powell was discussing The Tape before Al Jazeera acknowledged its existence. Perhaps it was an Intel coup, but even if so, Powell's premature discussion could have clouded world perception of the import of The Tape.

LONDON - A British-based Islamic news agency said Thursday it has a new audio recording of Osama bin Laden (news - web sites) in which he predicts he will die as "a martyr" this year in an attack against his enemies.
Gotta wonder if there is anything to this ...

Hmmmm - I will need a lot of convincing.
And what does American public opinion think about the tape? Do they believe its genuine? Dont they have any second thoughts about the timing of this tape. And why is it always an audiotape? Osama used to bring out video tapes, why would he change?
Too much tape. Duct tape, Poindexter taping us, bin Laden's tapes...
Agree with Blacksmithn on this one.
At this point, the Bin Laden tapes are almost irrelevant to most. Perhaps they might persuade some on the fence post that it is time to take a stand.
Tartarin, on your comment re: bin Laden and the Bush Family - you think maybe Bush has buddy bin in the White House basement with a sound studio and all? Well, it could happen!

They may be irrelevant but look at the chaos they have fomented.Bin Laden has got the US, figuratively, shaking in their boots without expending any effort other than generating a tape.
I agree with the member who said that nobody is really sure that the speaker is Bin Laden. The fact of the matter is, people ARE frightened, and that is EXACTLY what the tape was meant to do. That is called terrorism. Keep people off guard, emotionally shaky.
As far as I am concerned, que sera, sera. I can't have eyes in the back of my head, but I will be prudently cautious. Period. I am not stripping my Home Depot of its stock of plastic sheeting. If there is an attack, I will deal with it!
Actually, Bush is fast making himself irrelevant!
