is it correct to say "why would I be with someone I knew betrayed her friend to be with me" or "why would I be with someone I know betrayed her friend to be with me"?

@damifadipe,
Dam, damn!

why would I be with someone whom I knew had betrayed her friend to be with me

why would I be with someone I know betrayed her friend to be with me

That's actually okay. i know how tough this gets, while other local 'experts' think I'm an idiot

....yes it could be

@dalehileman,
I think past tense should be constant in the case of a narrative. Same reason you'd say "I knew he was coming so I went and bought him a gift" and not "I know he was coming ..." or "I knew he is coming" even though the person being talked about is still on his way.

"Why would I be with someone I knew betrayed her friend to be with me?"

Knew is correct. This is the past subjunctive, which is used in subordinate clauses and refers to imaginary, conjectured, unreal or improbable present or future situations:

If I were you, I would apply right now. (I am not you.)
What would you do if you won the lottery? (You probably won't win the lottery.)
It's time the kids were in bed. (The kids are not in bed.)
I wish you were here. (You are not here.)
I'd rather your boyfriend stopped calling you in the middle of the night. (Your boyfriend keeps calling you.)
He looks as if he knew the answer. (He gives the impression that he knows the answer, but he probably doesn't.)

I think both can be used.

You either learned this information in the past or you are just learning it now.

It's just a change in the tense.

@damifadipe,
why would I be with someone I have known betrayed her friend to be with me
"I knew "here should be parenthesis? I don't know exactly, but I think the present perfect tense is okay.

I don't get the reference but this is the best response to a dalehileman post ever. Thank you damifadipe. Thank. You. Very. Much. Crying or Very sad (tears of joy) Wink

In the first, Dam, i had added the words 'whom' and 'had,' while I considered 'why would I be' clearer if 'why would I want to be' but decided against it in view of my tendency to overproduce. However Dipe, I thought the two former changes slightly increased readability

How was I butchering
