In these days of identity theft, or simply computer error, it is very important that a person has a handle on what information the credit report companies has on a person. By keeping a close watch on what is on those reports, errors can be detcted, and fixed more easily. A new law will allow a person to get his credit report free once yearly. The law is being phased in over a number of months, according to your geographic location.

Soon you'll be able to get your credit report for free. A recent amendment to the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) requires each of the nationwide consumer reporting companies to provide you with a free copy of your credit report, at your request, once every 12 months, from
www.annualcreditreport.com. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, has prepared a brochure, Your Access to Free Credit Reports, explaining your rights and how to order a free annual credit report.

It's about time. I've never understood why the consumer has to pay to make sure that the agencies that collect their personal data are doing it right.
We won't be eligible here in the Northeast until much later in the year.
Wow--thanks for the info, Phoenix.
