Why would he write "my love always"?

I had a very loving relationship with a man some years back. He even talked about marriage sometimes. Then he went abroad to finish his studies. We wrote to each other for a while, then one day I received a card which just said "my love always". And I never heard from him again. I wrote to him but never got any replies so I stopped. I loved him very much and was really hurt by his silence.
If he had met someone else (and why not after all), or realised I was not the one for him, why not simply tell me?
I am left with this question in my mind and, even though it was a long time ago, it still bothers me. Anyone has any suggestions? Thank you.
PS : I never did anything wrong like cheat on him, just in case someone wonders.

@jeanjeanie,
He ghosted you. I'm sorry - but he's a jerk and you are better off without someone who would tell you something so sweet and then never follow through.

@jespah,
Well jespah, that was quite an answer. Thank you, it did so much good to me although it was, well, a bit brutal - but so true, and I am not being sarcastic, believe me. I didn't know the meaning of ghosting, so I went looking, read some articles etc. I got a shock, this was exactly what had happened to me. I didn't know this was a relatively common way of dealing with unwanted lovers. There was nothing I could have done, it had nothing to do with me, and it feels so much better now, thanks to you and your quick and simple post.

(Still, the mystery remains. Why bother with a card and "my love always" instead of simply vanishing? So I wouldn't suffer as much and wouldn't feel bad?
Well, it was the opposite!)

@jeanjeanie,
Some people are just cowardly when it comes to ending things. They say one thing, as you have seen, thinking they are going to spare the other's feelings. Or they want to somehow look better in the abandoned lover's eyes. Either way, it stinks.

You can do better.

@jespah,
Makes sense.
In any case, I am glad. I had found his address online and was thinking of saying hi, it's me how are you? And I would have made a real fool of myself, now I can move on :-)
It is a bright day today...
