I'm in negotiations with two partners. We are looking at opening in January. Unfortunatly we will miss the X-mas season.

I'm also considering going to the big show in vegas in the spring.

Ceili, I hope you have great success!

All I can offer is agreement with most everything that has been suggested; most important though, would be the comfort level. The only time I went into one of those stores I saw scatological cards and cheap, crude toys. My immediate impression was of skid row. Ugh.

One thing in the store that I loved was a magnificent display of penises, all colors and sizes. The thought of being able to pick and choose was....electrifying (many of them were also vibrators
). A "feel free to feel" tradition would really get your customers into the mood to buy.

Private classes and discussions would be wonderful for those of us who were raised in strict, repressive families. Adding to the comfort level would be beautiful furniture, good music, maybe cookies or expensive chocolates, fine linens, sexy and high quality lingerie---lots of sumptuous fabrics and candles; all would add to the desirablility of shopping there--the customer would be surrounded with a high quality ambience both welcoming and intriguing.

Something else you might look into is finding famous people who enjoy some of these toys (endorsements?). If a shy woman saw that one of her favorite actesses or writers indulged in your goodies, she would feel much more comfortable, knowing that she is in good company. It could offer the encouragement to become more familiar with this part of her sexuality.

Good luck!!

Diane, I absolutly know what you felt when walking into one of those stores, like I was in need of a shower. The first shop, or at least the first version will probably be along those lines, sadly;...
But...what I have in mind is more like what we are discussing here.
Great ideas from all...

Never even entertained the idea 'til a few months ago. But if I go, we will have to hook up. guaranteed.

Get the licencing in place, and combine your ideas with a tapas/martini bar, women free, charge a cover for men to enter the shop. Also, Diane's ideas are great, regarding the classes, discussions and atmosphere.

I was thinking a coffee bar, but hmmmm, tapas would be lovely.

I have been mulling over the ideas for classes, during weekends, or evening courses for a good long while now. I like the discussion angle, perhaps a book clubish type events. I'm studying and researching the possibilities and I really think this is what the shop will specialize in. I just don't know if I can do it, teach that is. I come from an extremely repressed background. I blush at the slightest hint of sexual expression, ok, maybe not as much as I used to. I am becoming more enlightened.
I haven't figured out how to inform the parents yet. I imagine it will be like a gay fellow coming out of the closet to ma and pa clampett.
Cover me, I'm goin' in...lol

Man, there is a LOT of great erotica out there...not porn. The book club idea would be great.

Good luck with Ma and Pa Clampett. There are so many of us who love sex but have been reluctant to really check out products, etc (thank heaven for the internet). I love some of the outrageously sexy threads on a2k; sometimes participating and sometimes just reading in awe!! This has been an eye opener that has added to my comfort level.

Another thought: don't forget the older women. I speak from experience--they are every bit as interested!!!

There are some great shops locally. Have you checked out the websites for places like Lovecraft? Sort of the gramma of 'nice' fun purveyors here.

diane, if you're looking for some ways to spice up the ol' sex life but are still a little unsure, I suggest checking out lovers lane online. They range from the tame (fruit scented and fruit tasting massage oil) to the truly kinky (butt plugs and bondage). Very Happy

Lovecraft...one of my old haunts. Nice place, and it never felt creepy.

I remember when a chain of sex-stores opened a store in our region.
1. It wasn't as "dirty" as the established shops.
2. It only had female staff and managers.
3. It had an atmosphere that appealed to women, as well as men. I guess that they didn't have the same movies on display at the check-out counter as my usual videostore, thank gosh!
4. Their address is orion.de if you want to check it out. (was that conform with T.O.S.?)

Kristie, thanks for the information, but I discovered the internet's wealth of material a couple of years ago. For me, older is much, much better, especially with a skinny old cowboy.

Maybe it would help to have a parking lot not visible to passing traffic?
