Not unclogging a drain, but getting out the pieces/strands of vegetable and other food matter and muck that gets caught at the top of the drain.
I've tried a small blade knife, toothpick, to no avail.
Ideas?

Depending on how stuck things are, you might be able to employ an old firm bristle toothbrush or a good bottlebrush, one made with metal framework and solid bristles.
To get stuff from further down, a wire hanger can work wonders.
