Can you whistle, wink or roll your tongue?

The wink thread caused me to ponder the above question.
I can wink with both eyes while others scrunch up their faces and are not terribly subtle.

Rolling of your tongue is genetic, some can - some can't, I can. Cool

I can put my lips together and whistle a tune but can't make a cat call to save my life. ( you know, the whistle where you put your fingers in the mouth.) I has been my observation that many Europeans whistle, a tradition perhaps.

I can roll my tongue.

During some of the long afternoons of childhood I practiced until I could wink with either eye. I also taught myself to spread my toes--both right foot and left foot.

I'd adore to be able to whistle--but my learning days aren't over yet.

Used to be able to do all of them. Still can roll tongue and wink with both eyes. Whistling is a tough one though if you can't immediately self-regulate and note when it becomes sound. I thought I still knew how to whistle until E.G. told me nope, no sound coming out, just air. Hmph.

I can do all. In fact, I combine the three at once for the Slappy mating call.

Hasn't worked yet.

I did the same thing.. Laughing

The day I out grew my grandmother, wasn't hard - she was 4'11", I finally mastered whistling. I could hold a note for a minute straight. Whoo ya!

Is Dixie a song, as in Whistling Dixie...or does it mean something else entirely?

The theme of the River Quai would be perfect for that Wink

I have an older brother, so whistling came at a young
age to me. Dto. for winking at his adorable friends,
and rolling my tongue was something I thought you
do while kissing.

Little did I know, hehe.

On rolling the tongue.... If both parents can - the offspring will be able too. If only one parent can...it's a 50/50/ thing.

Can you tie a cherry stem in your mouth? A learned skill I believe, I wonder if rolling your tongue makes it easier??? hmmmmmmm

I can do them all; however, I'll never win any awards for whistling a beautiful tune, but I sure can belt out a loud high pitched whistle when needed, to get everyone's attention.

When you announce, "I'm not just whistling Dixie," you mean that you have made a firm and serious statement on the subject at hand.

Whistling is an ostentatiously idle occupation. Whistling uses breath that would be better saved to cool your porridge.

I'm guessing that at the time of the Civil War there were many white-feather warriors who were happy to "whistle Dixie" but no about to get themselves down to the rucruiting office to sign up for either army.

From Wikipedia:

Minstrel show composer, Daniel Decatur Emmett, wrote the song called "Dixie's Land", first published by Phillip Werlein in New Orleans in 1859. The tune popularly became known simply as "Dixie". Many people identify the lyrics of the song with the iconography and ideology of the Old South. Some have considered it an unofficial "national anthem" of the South.

The chorus and first verse are still well-known in much of the U.S. South. One very seldom hears the additional verses.

Lyrics:

I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times there are not forgotten;
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

In Dixie's Land where I was born in,
Early on one frosty morning,
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

Old Missus married "Will the Weaver";
William was a gay deceiver!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

But when he put his arm around her,
Smiled as fierce as a forty-pounder!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver;
But that did not seem to grieve her!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Old Missus acted the foolish part
And died for a man that broke her heart!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

Now here's a health to the next old missus
And all the gals that want to kiss us!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

But if you want to drive away sorrow,
Come and hear this song tomorrow!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

There's buckwheat cakes and Injin batter,
Makes you fat or a little fatter!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then hoe it down and scratch your gravel,
To Dixie's Land I'm bound to travel!
Look away! Look away! Look away, Dixie's Land!

Then I wish I was in Dixie! Hooray! Hooray!
In Dixie's Land I'll take my stand, to live and die in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!
Away! Away! Away down South in Dixie!

I disliske porridge.

So I've been working on a harmony to Home, home on the Range. It's working out quite nicely.

Thanks Noddy, that was great.

I can do all of the above and I can touch my nose and tie cherry stems into knots with my tongue (not at the same time).

Ohh, well I can do that...I thought everyone could do that! When you said "roll your tongue", I thought you meant like actually rolling consistantly the oposite way the pic shows. I saw a chick do it that way once...was kinda creepy, but I bet it's a good sensation for some!....lol

Region! What a perfect picture!!! Smile

I can do all three thanks to the teaching of my daddy-o. Please don't take this in a vulgar way, but my dad can do amazing things with his tongue! (God, I hope my mom appreciates him!) He can roll it backwards (under) from the photograph, flatten it to look like a square in his mouth, do this really funky jump from cheek to cheek thing that blows my mind and can make it look as sharp as a pencil.

Personally, I think growing up on a farm in Iowa as a kid, he had WAY too much time on his hands! Smile
