( √2 - √3 )² = 5 - 2√6


Expand as for (a - b)2. (√2 - √3)(√2 - √3) = 2 - 2(√2 x √3) + 3


You "FOIL" it. FOIL stands for "First, Outer, Inner, Last", and that's the order you multiply the terms in.

( √2 - √3 ) X ( √2 - √3 )

First: √2 X √2 = 2
Outer: √2 X -√3 = -√6
Inner: -√3 X √2 = -√6
Last: -√3 X -√3 = 3

Add them together now.

2 - √6 - √6 + 3
5 - 2(√6)

The answer is 5 - 2(√6)

5-2√6 is in surd form.
This would also be equal to 0.101 >>> in accord with the honourable sagacious Timur’s pronouncement.

In this type of school math exercise, the required 'answer' is the surd that Tryagain provided. A surd is an irrational number, a number which cannot be expressed as a fraction or as a terminating or recurring decimal. The square root of 6 is irrational.
