looking for the name of a book

I tend to reread and reread books I've read in the past. Ive been racking my brain, and trying to remember authors I've read from , ive also been searching book stores and online with no luck. About 7 years ago my brother gave me a book to read and I loved it. But he doesnt recall the name or author either.

There was a town in which there was a tree, something lived under the tree. The main character was a man. Strange things kept happening to him. The main thing I remember was that he kept seeing peoples auras above their heads, and described them as baloons.

I know its a bit vague, im just hoping maybe someone else read this book and it might ring a bell. Any help would be wonderful. I read alot of books that suck me in due to the fact, none of it could be real. Like the Talisman by Steven King and Peter Straub. Michael creaghton also, and my favorite Anne Rice. Nora Roberts also, her witch stories and Key series .
thank you

I Feel Your Pain
I also am looking for titles of books read many years ago. Anyway yours did ring a bell. Piers Anthony wrote "Shade of the Tree" in 1986. I did a search and found on Amazon many reviews on it. Here is what was written on Barnes&Noble

Shade of the Tree

ANNOTATION
A widower and his two children move into a house in Florida left them by an eccentric uncle. But the house, built beneath the shade of a huge oak tree, proves to be haunted--by shades of the living and of the dead, and even more. "Light humor and dark fantasy in an intriguing blend" (Library Journal) from the author of the acclaimed Xanth novels.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
The estate was Joshua Pinson's inheritance from his oddball uncle Elijah: isolated in the deep Florida woods, with a half-built solar house stocked with enough supplies to weather a siege. Josh decided it was time to take his two young children away from New York and the memories of their murdered mother. Time to make a new life in sunny Florida. There was just one thing that Josh hadn't counted on.

The place was haunted.

Hope this is it.... Good Luck if it's not...
