@HarleyKelvin,
Regular dosages of vinegar and baking soda. Do it every other week and you should be fine.

Also use a drain sieve to prevent large food particles, hair, rings, plastic bits, straws, chopsticks, etc. etc. from going in the pipes. And never pour grease down there....use a can for that.

Flush the drain with hot water.... As in BOILING water, a gallon of it.

add 1/2 cup Baking Soda, then a combination of 1/2-cup each of vinegar and boiling water, let it sit for a while, oh say, 15 minutes, then flush with more boiling water. Then run hot water for several minutes.

If the clog is too severe, you may want to call in a licensed plumber.

Hey Stur, great, we have a plastic pen down there and I'm wondering whether this approach might weaken it of let it part so as to flush away

Got any other ideas

Thanks again Stur, it's not everyday.....

@dalehileman,
Probably not. Surely not enough to flush it away. In the case of something like a pen, better listen to #2 Son.

Serious answer to a (surely) frivolous answer: no, most of the pressure would go towards blasting everything out through ever drain in the system. They used to market a device that sealed a garden hose to the drain. If the main drain were clogged, it made a real mess everywhere else in plumbing system.

@roger,
This reminds me of when my brand new toilet from Home Depot turned out to be stopped up with a toy.

Hey, I'd probably rich if I tended toward sueing people.

@ossobucotemp,
I was thinking of that while I was writing.

You probably wouldn't be rich, but your lawyer might have a kid in need of a Harvard education.

@ossobucotemp,
I also remember how to design drains in complex places.
