A lot about the period, I should think, plus the usual things that you need to know to write any sort of novel, such as plotting, characterisation, grammar, spelling, etc. Read lots of historical novels and work out what the authors did well, what they did badly, etc, also read reviews of historical novels.

Dont forget to mention the huge mutant spiders and that Abraham Lincoln was a vampire hunter in his spare time. Everything else is standard.
