I read a series of book when I was working in Australia a few years ago. I noted them in a notebook and left the notebook on the vessel I was working on.
Anyhow, the series was about a man from a backward planet in an Empire who joined the Imperial Navy. The planet he came from should have prevented him from advancing through the ranks, but he did. He met a woman that he fell in love with, but never married. She went on to become an Imperial ambassador and they continued their affair, even though she married. I think that the man went on to hold high rank in the Empire. I can remember that the descriptions of space flight and planet fall were quite vivid. The descriptions of these massive space ships docking in anti gravity docks were especially good.
Not a lot to go on, but any help would be appreciated.
Sounds sort of early Heinleinish. Here's a link:
Heinlein
Poul Anderson has the sort of 'feel' that you describe, but the only series I can think of is 'Flandry of Terra'.
Hope this helps. And a big welcome to A2K.
I agree with Mr. Stillwater - it's prbably the "Flandry" series by Anderson.
There is another similar series by Bunch and Cole. They're the "Sten" books.
