Hello! We like to holiday at Holywell Bay, it is South of Newquay. The area has substantial sand dunes and a lovely beach, there are two giant rocks 500 yards out to sea called the Gull Rocks. I imagine most of the rock around this area is basalt or other igneous rock but on the beach are sdome giant boulders that are light grey in colour and very smooth, there seem to be ripples on some of the boulders. Are these boulders made from solidified magma, what is the name of this rock and from where did they originate? Thanks in advance for your time.

@simonfox,
We do have a geologist member here, farmerman, who posts often. You can private message him to answer your question or post in this thread from this page. He is American, but his work has taken him around the world so maybe he can tell you something.

If that doesn't work out, I suggest you call up the geology department of the nearest university to the beach and ask, there's a good chance they have studied the beach in detail. There might even be a government department that handles geological questions, but UK posters could help you more with that.
