Reoccuring ankle injury

My daughter has had several ankle sprains. We have gone to a pediatric orthopedic doctor, had an MRI and been to PT. At her last regular checkup her pediatrician noticed she had flat feet. We thought that is probably why she has had a few sprains.

So we had her fitted with inserts and once she fully recovered she began to play basketball again. We also sent her to sports performance to strength her so to prevent future injuries. She was doing very well for a couple of months.

She went to AAU tryouts and a girl stepped on her ankle resulting in my daughter twisting it. It didn't hurt her bad so she never told us. Then at practice she twisted it again (didn't tell us) and the next day at school it was hurting so she saw it was swollen.

Anyone know what we should do? We talked about giving up basketball as that seems to be the cause of her injuries - she also likes softball (like her sister) and has voiced possibly playing competitive softball instead.

We were thinking of having her rest until spring reason (basically stopping all basketball for the winter season) so she is ready for her AAU team this spring and then if she has another injury to stop basketball all together. She is very good at the sport and her team came in top 8 national division 2 last year. But I am worried about her repeated injury.

Obviously I will reach out to her doctor but just wanted an opinion from those that are not personally involved.

R.I.C.E. and get her a sturdy ankle brace that limits lateral movement. I had one back when I played basketball.

@McGentrix,
thanks - we have been doing this - RICE and the ankle brace.

This is probably the third or fourth sprain she has had in the span of a little over a year. We have become experts on how to handle the sprain (unfortunately) -- it is just how to stop the reoccurrence of future sprains.

@McGentrix,
We ordered one of these braces - hopefully it helps her.

She has decided against playing competitive basketball. (made me a little sad) - well it will save us over $2k this year between the all the fees and traveling. And the big trip to Orlando ESPN they are supposed to compete in their national tournament this year.

She hasn't told her coach yet - he just sent out the email about who made the team for the season.
