pg vs p

When I was at school, the abbreviation of page is pg and the plural is pgs. However, nowadays I come across p. for page and pp. for pages.

I am now confused. I wonder if my teachers had made a mistake. Or were they correct?

Thanks.

Both are possible; p singular pp plural are the most used; pg and pgs are listed as alternatives in some dictionaries but I have never seen them in use.
