The sentence contains an error. It should be "Americans" not "American."
Is it correct to use bold print and quotation marks together, as in 'Americans' and "American' above?

Why didn't you combine all these questions about what you can use in quotation marks into one? Whether you are thinking about bold, italic, underline, in general, when you want to quote something you use quotation marks. Nothing else is necessary. Too much playing around with font styles is tiring for the reader and gives an amateur appearance to printed material.
